The search for a missing Kelowna woman whose car was found near the Mission Creek Greenway has been temporarily suspended in and around Mission Creek due to safety concerns for searchers.

Chelsea Cardno was last seen leaving her home on Dougall Road South in Kelowna at around 8 a.m. yesterday, June 14. She was heading to the park to walk her German shepherd named JJ and her white BMW was found parked at the north end of Pasadena Road.

Const. Mike Della-Paolera, media liaison with the Kelowna RCMP, said he spoke with the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue team this morning. Their search has been suspended for today, June 16, and tomorrow as the creek is too fast and too high to conduct it safely.

“Tomorrow they will consult with the RCMP and they are hoping to get back to work on Saturday but again it’s going to depend on the creek, it’s just too dangerous to get back in there right now,” he said.

The RCMP is asking residents to stay away from Mission Creek.

Police continue to investigate Cardno's disappearance and are asking the public to report any leads on her whereabouts.

“Right now, there’s no evidence she’s in the river or not in the river, right now, we don’t know,” Della-Paolera said.

Kelowna is under a local state of emergency as the city deals with localized flooding.

Okanagan Lake has reached full pool and could rise further with more rain in the forecast.
