The Burger Baron in Rutland was an institution during its glory days in the 1960s. The beloved local burger joint that sadly was neglected by a former owner has risen again by an infusion of love by Karrin Morris who bought it in the fall of 2016.

This 50-seat retro diner with a busy drive-thru has pivoted to accommodate its fans during these COVID-19 days with half-capacity seating inside and new delivery options with NINJAnow and Uber Eats. The new renovations and recent makeover with murals commissioned by the Rutland Business Association grants have owner Karrin Morris excited about the year ahead.

“Our goal is to serve the highest quality food at affordable prices with our locally famous vintage experience," Karrin said.

She has four loyal staff members in-house who seriously love their job. Karrin says one of the employees has worked at “The Baron” for 22 years.  Karrin also loves hearing the nostalgic stories that customers share when visiting.

“Everyone who comes through has a story. We have had customers say that five generations of their family have eaten here,” she said.

They also have a new menu coming out soon to add to their classic favourites. The classic burger menu includes the “OG” Baron burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, red sauce (Single $4.95, Double $6.45) or Baroness with onion, pickle, red sauce (Single $3.75, Double $5.50) and the favourite mushroom burger.

The menu also caters to all including vegans, with the meatless “Beyond Burger” and veggie burger available as well as a Mediterranean/Halal Burger. And don’t forget a side of crinkle fries and that the Burger Baron is also famous for their fresh cream milkshakes made with real fruit.

Another favourite on the menu here is the genuine Halifax style Donair. The Halifax Donair consists of thin slices of garlicky tender beef laid on a warm Lebanese pita, topped with diced onion, tomato and cheese smothered in Donair sauce. Yum!

A couple of the dishes set to debut on the new menu are the Halifax Donair Poutine and Amanda’s Spicy Chicken Burger.
