While RCMP investigators were following up leads in a shooting last week at a motel in Kamloops, officers made an unrelated arrest.

RCMP found a vehicle abandoned on a rural property near Chase, which had been spotted at the scene of the Oct. 16 shooting at the Hospitality Inn on Columbia Street West, according to an RCMP media release. This led to the execution of a search warrant in Chase and resulted in the arrest of Steven Stuart Gardner.

"We take these types of incidents very seriously due to the blatant disregard for public safety and we are working hard to identify those responsible," Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Darren Michels said in the release. "We know that drugs, guns, and organized crime go hand in hand and continue to be a threat to our community. At this time, no suspects have been arrested in relation to this incident however several investigative leads have been undertaken since the day of the gun shots."

Gardner was arrested in an unrelated investigation involving events that occurred around Sept. 13. RCMP do not say what the events were. Gardner has been charged with driving while prohibited, possession of a firearm contrary to an order, and possession of a firearm without a licence.

RCMP said a photo of Gardner has been released in order to advance the investigation.

Anyone who witnessed this incident, or has any information regarding the suspects or Gardner, are asked to call the Kamloops RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-2477.
