NEW YORK, N.Y. - Some mental tricks from the experts on how to improve your game:
—While you execute a skilled movement like a free throw, keep your mind off the mechanics. Clear your head. Sing to yourself or think of a mantra such as "smooth" or "straight."
—Get used to pressure by practicing in front of an observer or a video camera.
—Find and stick to a routine or ritual that makes you comfortable.
—Set a time limit for how long you'll stew about a flub such as a bad golf shot. Then forget it and focus on the next action.
—Write down your anxieties about a big upcoming game. It's a little like downloading them so they're less likely to pop up during the event.
