NEW YORK - Newfoundland and Labrador musicians are bringing the folk tradition of "the Rock" to "Come From Away."
Alan Doyle, the Navigators, the Dardanelles and Rosemary Lawton are among the homegrown artists adding their twist to songs from the hit musical in "Covers from Away."
The folk album pays homage to the local sounds that influenced the score of the Tony Award-winning show.
"Come From Away" tells the true story of a Newfoundland community that took in thousands of passengers whose flights were grounded in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The musical's co-creators David Hein and Irene Sankoff produced "Covers from Away," which was recorded in various locations across Newfoundland and Labrador last summer.
A couple of the tracks also appear in the closing credits of a filmed version of "Come from Away" on Apple TV Plus.
"With this album, we hope to bring Newfoundland music to people around the world," Sankoff said Friday in a statement.
"I hope people will return the favour by seeking out these artists, and buying their albums and going to their concerts, and even coming to Newfoundland to hear them."
