Cold weather creates headaches at Kamloops facilities

A Kamloops arena reopened Monday after frozen pipes forced it to close over the weekend.

It was one of a series of weather-related problems for city facilities thanks to the cold snap in the Southern Interior.

Temperatures in Kamloops neared -30 Celsius over the weekend, while the Okanagan was slightly warmer at around -25 C.

Along with burst pipes at the Valleyview Arena, the Tournament Capital Centre pool lost heat over the weekend and there were water main breaks throughout the city, Darren Crundwell of the City of Kamloops said.

Most of the broken water pipes turned out to be privately-owned, but Crundwell said of the city-owned pipes to burst, one was at the water treatment plant.

In Kelowna, Anne McClymont Elementary will be closed for two weeks after a water main burst, according to a Central Okanagan school district news release. Most students will have to go to a different school temporarily as the repairs shut down the main building.

More leaks could show themselves as temperatures start to rise again.

Kamloops residents should contact the city if they see broken water mains. City operations can be reached at 250-828-3461.
