Bystanders help rescue people who fell through the ice on Okanagan Lake

Some parts of Okanagan Lake have been frozen over.

Bystanders helped rescue two people and their dog who fell through the ice on Okanagan Lake.

Around 3 p.m. yesterday, Jan. 13, two people and their dog were on the ice 100 meters off the shore at Kalamoir Regional Park when they fell through into the water, according to a press release from West Kelowna Fire Rescue.

The dog was off leash and exploring on the shoreline ice which led to it and its owners falling through.

WKFR received a call to come and rescue the pair from the freezing water. While the rescue team was enroute, the bystanders who witnessed the people fall into the water sprang into action and helped the pair get themselves and their dog out of the water.

When WKFR arrived they warmed up the pair in their cab before transferring them to BCAS.

“WKFR is grateful for the fast actions of the bystanders, no doubt increasing the likelihood of a successful outcome,” WKFR said in the release.

Fire rescue wants to remind people to keep pets on leash when around frozen bodies of water, check ice thickness and posted signage before stepping on the ice, let someone know if you plan on going onto the ice and bring a personal floatation device, and call 911 immediately and stay on solid ground if you see someone fall through the ice.

“WKFR would like to thank the bystanders, BC Ambulance and RCMP for their assistance in this successful rescue,” WKFR said.
