At least one blaze spawned as thunderstorms sweep across southern B.C.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - A lightning system sweeping across the southern Interior has already sparked at least one blaze.

Kamloops Fire Centre information officer Kayla Pepper says the fire has been spotted in the Merritt fire zone, near Brookmere, a remote area about 45 kilometres south of Merritt.

She says it is already about one hectare in size and is moderately active, although it is not threatening any structures.

One forest officer is already on scene and Pepper says another officer and a 20-person crew has been dispatched.

Pepper says the fire danger is rated as high in the Merritt, Princeton, Lillooet, Lytton and North Thompson regions.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of the southern and southeastern Interior, as well as the Peace River and Fort Nelson regions, with lightning, large hail, strong winds and heavy downpours possible this afternoon.
