A skier died at Sun Peaks after colliding with a tree earlier this week.

He was skiing a beginner trail on Mt. Morrisey on March 21, according to a news release from Sun Peaks Resort issued today, March 22.

The resort issued an initial statement on the same day of the death, but did not reveal any information about how he had died, only that ski patrollers were called to an injury and that the man later died.

"While enjoying the mountain environment is not without risk, events of this nature are rare, and we strive to provide a safe environment for everyone," the news release read.

"At this time, our focus is supporting those in need, including our employees who attended to the injured guest and have been involved with this situation."

Sun Peaks Resort said the man died on March 21 and the BC Coroners Service is investigating.

"Our thoughts are with everyone affected during this incredibly difficult time, and our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of this individual," the release read.
