Second snow day in a row for North Okanagan-Shuswap students

Massive amounts of snow in the North Okanagan are forcing school districts to decide whether or not to close schools.

SCHOOL DISTRICTS 22 AND 83 CANCEL CLASS

VERNON - Students in the Vernon and North Okanagan-Shuswap School Districts are getting a second snow day Tuesday, Jan. 6.

School District 83 announced Monday evening it will be shutting down all schools due to the continued winter storm warning and Environment Canada’s prediction of freezing rain. District education staff are not expected to be in attendance Tuesday.

The Vernon Christian School announced Monday night it is also cancelling school on Tuesday.

"Although snow clearing crews are working day and night we are told they are just managing to keep up with the main highways and streets," communications coordinator Corinne Remple said in a release. "We are cautioned that if the snow continues and the freezing rain arrives, crews may not be able to keep up with the clearing and sanding of roads, especially on the secondary routes."

St. James School also announced it is cancelling school on Tuesday.

School District 22 waited until Tuesday morning to announce it too would be calling a second snow day due to road conditions. Teachers are asked to report to work when it's safe to travel. Parents should arrange for alternate care for their children.?

The snow storm has also impacted Greater Vernon Recreation Services, and people enrolled in classes, or wanting to use facilities are advised to phone the Rec Centre at 250-545-6035 or check online for the status of programs and facilities before heading out. As of Tuesday morning, a number of programs had been cancelled, including Tiny tots, Osteofit, Weight training classes, morning aquafit and morning aqua therapy. The pool is open and swim lessons are going ahead. School swimming lessons are cancelled however due to school closures. All Kidnastics playschool classes are running. The Centennial Outdoor Rink will be closed all day due to the weather.
