SPRING IS HERE: Kamloops, Okanagan residents can put their snow shovels away

Sunny skies in the South Okanagan Monday, March 8, 2021.

If you’re enjoying today’s sunshine and seasonally warm temperatures, get ready for more of the same.

Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says Kamloops and Okanagan residents living on the valley floor can put away their snow shovels.

“Don’t forget the Sahali and Joe Rich areas (of Kamloops and Kelowna respectively) can easily get snow yet, but down on the valley bottom, if it snows, it’s going to melt. It’s spring, it’s only the high terrain we have to worry about,” Lundquist says.

This week looks pretty good for sun and seasonal to slightly above seasonal temperatures, but Lundquist says the best could be yet to come.

“We could be seeing 20 degree weather. We are going to push the high teens. We’ll see what happens, maybe next week. There might be a chance to get to the beach,” he says.

Lundquist says the outlook for this week is sunny with daily highs of eight to 12 Celsius throughout the region. With clear skies overnight, expect nighttime lows to dip down to -4 C to -6 C over the next few nights.

The normal high and low for Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton is 7 C and -2 C. In Kamloops, the city sees an average high of 9 C and a low of -2 C in early March.

“Overall, it’s mainly sunny with some cloudy periods throughout the week. We’ll have more on that warm weather next week as the weekend approaches,” he says.
