A young athlete from Salmon Arm captured two gold medals and a silver medal at the para Nordic world championships in Sweden this past weekend.

Natalie Wilkie, 22, won the 7.5-kilometre biathlon event in the women’s standing competition, a gold medal in the Sprint category and a silver in the Distance Classic, in the international competition running Jan. 20 to 29 in Ostersund, Sweden.

For the biathlon event athletes ski three or five times on a 2 or 2.5 km course for a total race distance between 6 and 15 km while shooting targets with an air rifle, according to the International Paralympic Committee.

The skiers must hit targets located at a distance of 10 metres away, and each miss means an increase in the overall route time.

Wilkie missed one of 10 shots but still took the win with a time of 22 minutes and 43.5 seconds.

Collin Cameron of Sudbury, Ontario, also captured a gold medal for the Canadian team, with Brittany Hudak of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and Mark Arendz of Hartsville, P.E.I., claiming silver medals.
