Police officer injured in Kelowna hit-and-run

KELOWNA - RCMP have a suspect in custody after a driver hit a Kelowna police officer in an attempt to flee this morning.

RCMP say they received a report at around 9:59 a.m. today, April 19, about a man who appeared to be asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle with the engine running in the Wilden area of Kelowna.

An officer knocked on the driver-side window to wake the man, according to an RCMP media release. He did not comply with the request to shut off the engine, putting the car into drive and taking off.

As he pulled out, he hit the officer with the vehicle. The RCMP member sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect vehicle was eventually intercepted by Lake Country members who deployed a spike belt effectively deflating some of the tires, police say. The driver continued driving until he collided with a police vehicle and ended up in a ditch. He was able to flee on foot.

After a short foot pursuit into the bush, the driver was apprehended and arrested.

RCMP say the man faces several charges including dangerous driving, flee from police and assaulting a police officer.
