A loaded logging truck was stopped at a red light in West Kelowna when it was rear ended by a small car early this morning.

A 53-year-old Kelowna was driving the car, a black 2008 Dodge Caliber, and he died of his injuries, according to a Kelowna RCMP news release. He was the only person in the car.

An off-duty police officer came upon the scene while heading to work at 4:55 a.m. today, Aug. 15.

Police say the truck was stopped in the northbound lane of Highway 97 at the Boucherie Road intersection.

“This was a terrible motor vehicle collision leaving a family mourning the loss of their father. The RCMP would like to thank all the first responders who attended this difficult scene," Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Const. Mike Della-Paolera said in the release.

RCMP victim services is working with the family and the truck driver is cooperating with police.

West Kelowna RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service are each investigating the collision, but police say it's not a criminal investigation.

Police are also asking that any witnesses or people with dashcam footage contact West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.
