A popular family of Summerland skeletons started their month of Halloween celebrations with a hot air balloon ride over the South Okanagan.

Created by resident Heather Pescada five years ago, the Peskelly skeleton family spends every October dressing in different costumes and showing up at various places around town.

“There is a grandma and grandpa, and a family of four with a son named Kelly and they just had a baby named Tibia last year,” Pescada said. “There are three other ones I have for backup. I don’t know how many animals I have.”

The Peskelly family can be seen hanging out in the backyard at 6024 Nixon Road in Trout Creek, or often on a local train, or at other events like gender reveal parties.

This year they kicked off the month by sending son Kelly for a hot air balloon ride over Penticton, Oct. 1.

“My husband surprised me with a hot air balloon ride for our anniversary,” Pescada said. “At the last minute I thought to bring Kelly Peskelly for the ride. I thought there wouldn’t be room for an adult sized one.”

Pescada started the fun after seeing another family doing it and said initially she only planned on setting up the displays for a year. But, to her surprise, the Peskelly family quickly took on a life of their own.

“People start asking about them in August,” she said. “The bus driver stops to let riders have a good look at the yard. Kids come by every day and some say they change their route to work to see it."

“I’m sure some people roll their eyes but I think most people appreciate it.”

This year Pescada said the displays will not change as often since she is busy working at a graduation fundraiser running the Sorcery Express KVR steam train in Summerland, but she is still committed to keeping up the fun.
