KAMLOOPS - A proposal to rezone a commercial lot to allow a new apartment building in Valleyview was approved by Kamloops city council yesterday.
The apartment building will feature 40 suites and include 24 bachelor units, 12 two-bedrooms units and four one-bedroom units, according to a report prepared for city council. The project doesn't currently have a timeline for construction.
The new apartment building will be built at 155 Oriole Rd. Development and Engineering Services director Marvin Kwiatkowski told council yesterday, April 24, the proposed apartment building is close to various commercial uses and a bus route.
“It’s within walking distance to various community amenities,” Kwiatkowski said.
Coun. Tina Lange was happy to hear about the rezoning application for an apartment. According to a report last year by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Kamloops's vacancy rate was at 1.2 per cent — a healthy vacancy rate sits at four per cent.
"I'm pleased to see this proposal has been put forward," Lange said.
Blue Green Architecture has designed several buildings throughout Kamloops and Kelowna. According to the company, there is no housing agreement for the new complex and it will be open to anyone.
Councillors voted unanimously to approve the rezoning application.
