Thousands of dollars have been raised via online fundraisers for the family of a man who died in a motorcycle crash in Kamloops last month.

Donavin Akerley died Sunday, Sept. 26, in a motorcycle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway in the Valleyview area. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has started an inquiry into the accident to determine if police action or inaction led to his death.

According to the police watchdog, Akerley, 35, initially passed a marked police vehicle, then collided with a Dodge Ram after running a red light at the Highland Road intersection.

A GoFundMe, created by Ashley Regan, is raising money for her nephew Darrian Akerley who lost his father in the crash.

“Darrian just turned 14-years-old and has many aspirations and needs that his dad would have been helping with. My sister Angela Regan, Darrian’s mom, is his rock and will now be the sole provider and will need any help she can get to save for Darrian’s future and help with any expenses or things that Donavin would be contributing towards with Angela for their son Darrian,” Regan wrote in the GoFundMe.

As of Oct. 10, $2,400 has been raised out of its $10,000 goal.

A separate GoFundMe has also raised more than $2,000 to cover funeral costs for the family.

“Please donate to help us put this man to rest and give him the funeral he deserves,” wrote Kamloops resident Eric Thompson, on the GoFundMe.

A well-known biker in the community, Kamloops motorcyclists are considering holding an annual memorial ride in Akerley’s honour.
