A man well known in the Kamloops motorcycle community died in a crash in the city on Sunday.

Donavin Akerley was killed while riding his motorcycle on the Trans-Canada Highway in the Valleyview area.

Kamloops RCMP responded to the crash just before 7 p.m., Sept. 26, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has started their own inquiry into the crash.

According to the IIO, Akerley had initially passed a marked police vehicle, then collided with a Dodge Ram after running a red light at the Highland Road intersection.

The IIO is a civilian oversight agency which investigates police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death. The investigation will determine whether or not there is any wrongdoing or an officer's actions were related in Akerley's death.
