The Latest: Mother believes US vet held in Iran has cancer

SAN DIEGO - The Latest on a U.S. Navy veteran being held in Iran (all times local):

1:05 p.m.

The mother of a U.S. Navy veteran being held in Iran believes her son's life-threatening cancer has recurred and is calling for his release to seek treatment.

Joanne White's spokesman Jonathan Franks says in a statement Friday that she bases that belief on evidence from Iranian nationals who were incarcerated with her son, 46-year-old Michael White.

He has been held since July and is the first known American to have been detained in Iran since Donald Trump became president.

His family says he travelled to Iran to visit his girlfriend, who he met online, and was arbitrarily detained.

Earlier, an Iranian prosecutor said White is being held in connection to a "private complaint."

The semi-official Mehr news agency on Friday quoted prosecutor Gholamali Sadeghi as saying the case is still "under investigation," without elaborating. He did not confirm reports that the man faces security charges.

Trump has pursued a maximalist campaign against Tehran that includes pulling out of its nuclear deal with world powers. Iran in the past has detained Westerners and dual nationals to use them as leverage in negotiations.
