PENTICTON –The Penticton Vees’ new look top-line is getting along just fine. Chris Klack scored twice and Duncan Campbell scored again, as the Vees held off the Prince George Spruce Kings 3-2, Saturday at the SOEC.

The line of Klack, Campbell and Nicholas Jones combined for four goals and seven points this weekend in wins over Salmon Arm and PG.

The Vees had to overcome a sluggish start, as the Spruce Kings scored 68-seconds into the first and held a 1-0 lead through 20-minutes, before the Vees found their footing in the second.

Mat Robson was very sharp, especially when the Vees grabbed the lead, as the veteran puck-stopper stopped 23 of 24 shots for his 14th win of the season.

Kyle Johnson scored just seconds into the game to stun the over 3,300 fans in attendance. Jared Hovde had his shot knocked down by Robson’s glove on a partial breakaway, but Johnson crashed the crease and forced the puck underneath Robson. It appeared the puck actually went off of Johnson’s skate but the goal stood after a quick conference amongst the officials.

That goal stood up until the six-minute mark of the second, when the Vees finally pulled even. Klack forced a turnover in his own end and turned back the other way on a three-on-two rush. He elected to shoot and his decision was a wise one, as he fired a wrist-shot over Stefan Wornig’s glove at 5:58; Klack starting and finishing the play. That goal seemed to spark Penticton as they kept up the pressure in the second and that manufactured a go-ahead goal.

Duncan Campbell, in his first game at the SOEC, snaked his way behind the Spruce Kings defencemen and was sprung on a breakaway on a great pass from David Eccles. The newcomer barreled down the middle before snapping a shot upstairs for his third goal at 14:28.

Penticton flipped the script in the second, as they outscored the Spruce Kings 2-0 and outshot them 12-6, after being down 1-0 and outshot 10-6 in the first.

Tempers flared early in the third period, as Taylor Ward and Adam Burnett of the Spruce Kings, tussled in the PG end. The two combatants exchanged some quick punches, before wrestling each other to the ice.

Klack found the scoresheet again late in the third period and was the beneficiary of some poor puck handling by the Spruce Kings’ goaltender. Behind the PG net, Klack stole the puck away from Wornig who went back to play a Vees’ dump in. Klack quickly scooped it up and curled out front to slide it into an open net at 17:50. That goal loomed large, as Price George wouldn’t go away without a fight.

With just seconds left and the PG net empty, Connor Russell got enough on his shot from the bottom of the circle, to squeeze it through Robson to cut the Vees’ lead to 3-2. Russell scoring with just seven-seconds left on the clock.

However, that was as close as the visitors would come and tempers flared up again late, with the two teams mixing it up as the clocked expired.

Final Score: 3-2 Vees

Shots: 24-23 Prince George

Power-Plays: Vees 0-4 Prince George 0-4

Three Stars: 1) Duncan Campbell 2) Mat Robson 3) Chris Klack

Attendance: 3,314

Jones’ assist in the second period extended his point-streak to seven games (2-8-10). Penticton improved their record to 17-3-0-0 with the win and they’re now 7-1-0-0 against the Mainland Division.

The Vees are back in action on Wednesday, November 9th, when they host the Coquitlam Express at the SOEC on another Wicked Wednesday.
