Kelowna RCMP has cleared a major crime and emergency scene on Adams Road in Rutland after six hours of closures, but aren't explaining what happened.
Police closed off the area in the 100 block of Adams Road, in the industrial section, just after 2 p.m. yesterday, March 27 and cleared the scene last night at 8:30 p.m.
“What happened will come out in due course," Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Michael Gauthier said in a release.
Unconfirmed accounts on social media suggested shots were fired in an industrial building before police arrived and they suspect two people are dead. They said police used a flash bang and a fire started shortly afterward.
"This was a serious incident and in order to ensure everyone’s safety, it was necessary to shut down the highway and evacuate the surrounding areas until it ended. From the onset, this investigation required many resources including but not limited to General Duty, Investigative Services, Police Dog Services, the SED Emergency Response Team and the Kelowna Fire Department. Because this incident also included a structure fire in the location of interest, it will take some time before our officers can safely go in and continue the investigation.”
