A Kelowna man will spend more than two years in prison after he was convicted last year of touching the daughter of his girlfriend more than 30 years ago.
The man, referred to in a recent decision only by his initials, JWW, initially faced a number of allegations from the two sisters, but was only convicted of one charge of sexual interference.
The court heard both daughters noticed the man touching their chests among other sexual behaviours and they described him masturbating repeatedly in their presence and watching them in the bathroom.
One of the girls was as young as five when the crimes began and they occurred over many years, some allegations spanning into adulthood.
The court heard that it was only after their mother died and he found another girlfriend that they finally went to the police.
The difficulty for Justice Warren Milman was whether JWW should spend time in prison or at home under a conditional prison sentence.
Milman heard that both his new girlfriend as well as his mother required him for care. The judge acknowledged that both would suffer if he sent JWW to prison.
But he was also in a position of authority over the girls and traumatized them, while maintaining his innocence, the justice noted.
He sentenced the man to two-and-a-half years in prison.
