Keeping it safe on New Years' Eve

Kamloops RCMP detachment

KAMLOOPS - A full complement of RCMP officers will be out on patrol Wednesday evening to make sure partiers are keeping it safe as they ring in the New Year.

The extra units will set up various road blocks throughout the city to check if those who are too drunk to drive are using a designated driver.

"Our message is to be responsible in your own actions as well as look after your friends and family," Cpl. Cheryl Bush said. "Be sure that you and the people you are celebrating with make appropriate choices, especially in regards to drinking and driving."

Last year, officers responded to 59 calls - a smaller amount than the total in 2012. Fifteen people spent the night in the detachment's drunk tank. Two people were arrested for drinking and driving.

Remember there are options available if you choose to drink over the holidays. Do not drink and drive:

- You can call Operation Red Nose. Volunteers will drive you in your car wherever you need to go in Kamloops for a donation. Call 250-372-5110.

- Zero Tolerance DD’s offers a similar service to Red Nose. Contact 778-220-9376.

- Kami Cabs – 250-374-9999

- Yellow Cabs – 250-374-3333
