A pack of wiggling wiener dogs will be storming the ice at a Kamloops hockey arena and there's still time to register to join in the fun.

It's the third time the Kamloops Storm has hosted the wiener dog races. The KIJHL team last hosted the event to raise funds for charity and bring smiles to people’s faces in 2019.

“There were around 30 dogs last time and I’ve had many people asking if we can do it again,” Storm general manager Matt Kolle said. “It was such a positive event that created a lot of laughter and raised money for the right reasons.”

The dogs will be released at one end of the arena before the ice is cleaned between the first and second periods during a game with the Revelstoke Grizzlies at McArthur Island Arena on Feb. 4.

The cost to enter is free for two people and one dachshund or dachshund mix to enter.

“The race itself lasts three to five minutes,” Kolle said. “They start at one end on the goal line with one person and the other person is at the other end of the arena coaxing the dog. Some dogs go astray and that’s the fun of it. They're so cute.”

The event includes a 50/50 silent auction and great prizes donated by local businesses and organizations, with all proceeds going to Angel’s Animals Rescue Society, a non-profit animal shelter and adoption service located in Merritt.

The rescue society will have a booth and adoptable dogs onsite to showcase their organization, while more booths will be set up by local dog-related businesses.

“We are excited to take part in this year’s wiener dog races,” reads a post on the rescue’s Facebook page. “We will be set up with a few adoptable dogs and prizes. Please share, and hope to see you there.”

The race takes place at McArthur Island Arena at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4.
