Ten big dogs had to be rescued by BC SPCA from a remote property in Northern B.C. after their owner was hospitalized.

The malamute/husky cross dogs were left without food or water on the property two hours north of Fort St. John, according to a Jan. 19 media release by BC SPCA.

“Thankfully, we were alerted to the situation and our officers were able to reach the property to provide food and water and to do an initial health inspection on the dogs,” said BC SPCA spokesperson, Eileen Drever. “Access to the property is about 150 metres from a main road and the dogs were kept tethered outdoors further in on the property. When the dogs saw our officers approaching they began barking frantically – they were so excited to see people.”

The officers gave the dogs food and water and checked them for immediate health concerns. The dogs “ate voraciously” before settling down, and were calm and friendly, according to the release.

“Because of the remoteness of the property and the snowy winter conditions, we had to come up with a creative solution to transport them to Prince George as quickly as possible,” Drever said.

The society hired a cargo plane that could fit and transport six of the dogs to Prince George, and the remaining dogs were transported by road.

“The dogs are in good health overall and appear quite friendly,” Drever said. “We’re just relieved that we were able to get them off that remote property and somewhere safe and warm where they will receive the on-going care and attention that they need.”

The owner of the dogs is in a hospital in Edmonton and, according to the release, asked to surrender the dogs to SPCA because he wasn’t sure when he could return and didn’t have anyone else to look after them.

The dogs are safe in BC SPCA care in Prince George.
