Kamloops pulp stink blamed on power outage

FILE PHOTO

An early morning power outage stunk up parts of Kamloops today.

Kruger Pulp and Paper temporarily shut down its Mission Flats mill after an unexpected power failure around 6:20 a.m., Sept. 12.

The outage meant gases normally incinerated were sent into the atmosphere, leaving the stink of sulfur in the Kamloops air.

According to a Kruger news release, downtown air monitoring was within an acceptable contaminant threshold according to measurements around 10 a.m.

The mill generates its own power and typically contributes any excess to the overall power grid. BC Hydro did not report any other power outages in the Mission Flats area.

The company is investigating how the outage happened and expects to resume mill operations by the end of today.
