Kamloops man sues landlords, City after slipping on ice

A Kamloops man broke his leg, tore tendons connecting his shin to his ankle and suffered a back injury after slipping on an icy sidewalk in January — and now he's suing.

Darren Crowell is taking the City of Kamloops and his landlords to court, claiming each had a duty to ensure snow and ice was clear, according to court documents filed July 19, 2022.

Crowell alleges his landlords and the City were negligent and breached a common duty of care. According to the civil claim, he fell on the "sidewalk or the driveway" on Jan. 21, 2022.

The claim adds that his landlords Kuljit Singh Sandhu, Jaswant Singh Sandhu and Sukhwinder Kaur Sandhu were responsible for clearing snow for Crowell, according to the tenancy agreement.

He alleges that the landlords and the City had a duty of care either through the Occupiers Liability Act or through the tenancy agreement to ensure the sidewalk and driveway were safe to walk.

Crowell is seeking damages and costs associated with his injuries, including interest since the date of his injury.

Neither the landlords nor the City have yet responded to the claim. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
