A Kelowna man was caught in a stolen car this morning with a device used to reprogram car key fobs.

Officers spotted a man in a car with stolen license plates near Burnett Avenue around 9:30 a.m. today, Jan. 9, according to a press release from police.

Officers arrested a 48-year-old man, who is known to police, without incident.

When officers investigated further they found out the grey 2022 Honda Civic had been stolen from the 1300-block of Richter Street the morning of Dec. 31.

Officers found trafficking quantities of drugs, and the key fob programming kit.

“These kits are costly and used by auto dealers and mechanics to program key fobs for vehicles,” Sgt. Scott Powrie said in the release.

“In the wrong hands, it could be used to assist a would-be thief to steal virtually any vehicle that uses a key fob and we are very happy to have recovered it. The kit has been seized as stolen property and we are seeking public assistance in determining where it came from.”

The suspect has been released from custody but the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the car key fob programmer is asked to call RCMP at 250-762-3300 and reference police file number 2025-1488.
