A nine-year-old golfer from Kamloops qualified to compete in the biggest world junior golf championship this week.

Everett Quewezance is representing his town and country at the US Kids Golf World Championship in North Carolina from Aug. 1 to Aug. 3.

His dad and coach Joe Quewezance said so far, Everett is playing amazing.

“He finished +1 for the day. Quite a few players still out there but he’s tied 11th right now,” Joe said. "He played amazing and put himself in a good spot with two days left to go."

The championship is for golfers ages 5 to 12 who qualify by reaching certain standards at junior tournaments throughout the year. Young athletes compete for trophies, gain life experience, make friends and learn about the game. Everett is competing against 120 kids in his age category.

The father and son were at the IMG Academy World Junior Championships in San Diego a few weeks ago where Everett finished 24th out of 124 as a 9-year-old in the boys 9-10 division.

While Joe was on the course and didn't have much time to comment, he said, "I'm so proud of Everett, he is playing against the best in the world this week."

Everett Quewezance has competed in world level junior golf championships since the age of seven and has a lot of support from his Kamloops community. He and his dad are both avid golfers, and Everett has been following his dad around the course since he was a toddler.
