An eight-year-old golfer from Kamloops is on his way to San Diego today to compete in the IMG Academy World Junior Championship.

It’s the second year in a row Everett Quewezance has competed in the championship against the young best golfers from around the world. Last year, he was the youngest in his division and came out in the middle of the pack in standings.

“This year he’s going with more experience, he’s one of the older kids now and has learned more lessons,” his dad and coach Joe Quewezance said. “He’s hitting the ball longer and playing really well. Once his putts start dropping, the sky is the limit for him.”

Joe said the young athletes compete for trophies, gain life experience, make friends and learn a lot about the game at the championships. Everette will compete against a couple of kids he met last year.

“We know a couple of the kids and it’s going to be pretty good competition, they are the best young players in the world,” Joe said. “It’s exciting to see what happens, no matter what happens I’m so proud of him. He’s worked hard and set some goals, what more could I ask for as a coach and a father.”

Joe said his son is mentally strong despite the pressure of the competition because of the amount of support and encouragement he receives from the community. While Everette’s game has improved over the past year, his mental strength has too.

“Yesterday he had a couple of tough holes and he got down and out so we had a long chat,” he said. “Today he went out and we played a round and he had a tough hole and just moved on. Hopefully that ability is around to stay. One of my favourite things is watching him struggle and get out of it, seeing him learn from it in golf, and in life as well.”

The pair are aiming to beat last year’s standings and "have lots of fun."

IMG Academy World Junior Championship runs from July 8 to 13 at the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.
