iN NUMBERS: B.C. student loan value doubled last year

Student debt in B.C. has doubled in the past year, but enrolment has barely increased.

Just in case you wanted another set of data about these tough economic times, we’ve got you covered.

Here are the numbers:

  • 377: Million dollars is the total value of provincial student loans in 2023/2024.
  • 180: Million dollars was the total value of provincial student loans in 2022/2023.
  • 53,892: Provincial student loans were given out in 2022/2023.
  • 62,948: Provincial student loans were given out in 2023/2024.
  • 27,739: Dollars is the average undergraduate student debt in 2023/2024.
  • 16,424: Dollars is the average college student debt in 2023/2024.
  • 10,309: Bucks for the entire Okanagan College diploma in data analytics and economics.
  • 9,726: Bucks for one semester in the international economics program at UBC.
  • 4,761: Bucks for tuition for the average degree at Thompson Rivers University.
  • 75: Per cent of UBCO’s budget goes to faculty and staff.
