An online fundraiser for the family of a Kamloops man killed in a crash on Highway 5 North has raised more than $27,000.

Juver Balmores, who leaves behind a wife and three children, was one of two people killed in a head-on collision with a semi truck near Clearwater on April 23.

Balmores, a 36-year-old CN employee, was driving a company truck when they collided with the transport truck around 12:50 a.m. His coworker and passenger, who hasn't been identified, was injured and taken to hospital, while a passenger in the semi truck was killed.

Neither occupant of the semi-truck has been identified.

Coworkers created a fundraiser for Balmores' family after the collision, which has now raised more than $27,000 as of April 26.

"Juver left a lasting and positive impression on every life he touched and will be greatly missed," the online fundraiser reads. "We need our small but mighty terminal to come together in the time of need to help support Ria, his wife, while she tries to navigate unfamiliar territory with their three young children."

The United Steelworkers Union issued a statement on April 25, mourning Balmores death.

“Joining CN Rail in 2022, Juver quickly endeared himself to his colleagues with his kindness, dedication and unwavering commitment to his work,” Cole Kramer, steelworkers union local 2004 president, said in the statement. “His passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him, within the CN Rail community and beyond.”

The cause of the collision is still being investigated.

It's one of many fatal collisions along the stretch between Kamloops and Clearwater in the past few years. Another crash slowed traffic along the same highway near Little Fort just a day later.
