A large wildfire burning in the South Okanagan has increased in size by 100 hectares but the B.C. Wildfire Service says that's due to winds at higher elevations and planned ignitions.

The Keremeos Creek Wildfire, burning roughly 21 kilometres southwest of Penticton, is currently mapped at 7,042 ha today, Aug. 20.

Cooler temperatures are expected today, with moderate humidity. Thunderstorms are in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday so firefighters expect to see winds increase, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service's latest update.

"In many areas, forest fuels at high elevations are green and the moisture content is preventing ignition and spread."

Earlier this week, all evacuation orders were rescinded for areas near the wildfire. All structure protection crews have also been removed.

North of Olalla Creek Road, crews are establishing a fuel free hose lay and extinguishing hots spots. Mop up activities continue along the fire's western flank, along the Green Mountain Road where there is "minimal" fire activity, according to the service.

Smoke will continue to be visible from Highway 3A and surrounding communities.

There are 193 firefighters, 15 helicopters and 19 pieces of heavy equipment on site today.
