Elimination takes time and patience

Eviction is never an easy thing, especially when it’s of the four- legged critter kind.

A common reaction to when we see or hear a rat, mouse, carpenter ants or other pests, is that we want them gone immediately. Unfortunately, wiping out the pest that is taking over our home or office is not something that can be done with one treatment from a pest control operator. It’s usually more complicated then that as there are many dependents to consider and understand.

“Elimination does take time and you have to know the biology and life cycle. People expect pests to be gone in one day. The longer pests are left, the worse they get. Usually when someone calls, it’s out of control already,” says Jason Gilpin, owner of Thompson Interior Pest Control in Kamloops and Gilpins Pest control in the Lower Mainland.

Ants for instance can be present for at least two weeks before being eliminated, trapping programs can take up to three weeks or more as mice may be tucked away in walls and there is more than one generation to capture.

Part of the reason elimination may take more time than expected is due to the safety and environmental regulations that must be followed.

“Pest control is an evolving and rapidly growing industry in BC, but with the constant changes in environmental and government regulations to protect the environment, combined with our customers’ requirements to be pest free; it is a complicated procedure to effectively and safely treat many pests that are becoming a common occurrence,” explains Gilpin.

Regulations on insecticides and rodenticides combined with pest biology may not allow control to be achieved immediately, but a short time after, assures Gilpin, who has been in the business since he was a teenager working with his dad’s pest control company.

“Many of the products we use are very safe for anything but insects. They are designed to break down in ultra violet light for environmental safety and designed to become inactive in a shorter time frame then older chemicals.”

By using these products, it keeps non target pests such as bees and other pollinators protected from accidental poisonings and eliminates exposure to humans, pets and wildlife.
“Some rodenticides are designed for no-to-low secondary poisoning; meaning that if a dog or owl eats a poisoned rodent, that dog or owl will not be poisoned,” says Gilpin.

Bed bugs are one of the toughest bugs to eliminate. Heat treatment is often the most effective, but can cost more. Ticks are also difficult as Gilpin says they are unable to treat the outdoor of a home. Ticks will come into a home on the fur of mice or even deer that may be around the family home.

Homeowners can play a role in keeping unwanted critters from taking up residence in and around their home. Any type of clutter that is against a house will attract rodents. Removing wood, garbage, water sources and other debris will help.  Rodents need a nesting area, food and a water source. If all three of those are in a three foot radius, rodents will stay there forever, according to Gilpin.

As pretty as the birds may be, the feeders homeowners have are a definite attraction as are any open cracks or holes in the exterior of a house or shed.

But trapping pests, spraying and sealing up a building may not end the cycle. Mice, rats, raccoons and others leave pheromones behind which they will trace back. By having pest control eliminate the pheromones with an enzyme spray, rodents will not track that scent back to the house.

The bottom line, according to Gilpin, is that his team can eliminate whatever is taking over your home, but it may take a little time and some return visits; but he assures it will be done in a safe way.
