Peach trees at Davison Orchards in Vernon are looking healthy without any bud damage coming out of the winter months after suffering major cold weather damage for three years in a row.
The orchard grows several varietals of apples, pears and peaches, with peach trees being the least hardy in cold weather.
“Of course, we’ve had two or three pretty tough winters particularly for peaches,” owner Tom Davison said in a video he posted to social media on March 11. “This past season we still had a few cold weeks in February but it wasn’t nearly as harsh as the previous couple of years.”

At the beginning of March, Davison cut shoots off different peach varietals and put them in water inside where it’s warm. The shoots have sucked up the moisture and the buds for blossoms are swelling, a sign the buds are healthy. Last year, the buds dried up and fell off.
“It looks like a super nice bunch of blossoms that are coming that are very healthy and should provide us great peach growth,” Davison said. “We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, we’re not there yet, but things look good at this stage.”
The weather is a critical element in getting the trees to the blossoming stage at the end of April without frost damage that can be caused when the weather warms up too early and a frost follows.
Located at 3111 Davison Road in Vernon, Davison Orchards Country Village has been operating since 1933 and is known for its sustainable farming practises, educational farm tours and being a fun place for families to enjoy.
The farm and market opens to the public on May 1.
