OPINION

Dear Editor,

Tara Armstrong’s decision to leave the BC Conservative Party is her own, but her continued use of derogatory language to attack her perceived opponents — especially the majority of her own constituents — is deeply concerning.

By referring to “woke liberals” as infiltrators and suggesting that her former party leader “caved” by removing an MLA who mocked residential school survivors, Armstrong reveals a troubling misunderstanding of both leadership and public service. She seems more interested in grievance politics than in actually representing Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream.

Many British Columbians — likely more than half — proudly consider themselves “woke,” not as an insult but as a commitment to fairness, equality, and truth. If Armstrong believes those values are a problem, she should explain why rather than resorting to playground name-calling. An elected official should not belittle her own constituents for caring about reconciliation or supporting policies she disagrees with.

Furthermore, her claim that Dallas Brodie was merely “telling the truth about Kamloops” is indefensible. The truth is that residential school survivors have spoken. The truth is that the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Nation has shared its findings. The truth is that generations of Indigenous children suffered and died in those schools. Any attempt to downplay or mock that reality is not courageous — it is shameful.

Armstrong’s refusal to respond to media inquiries is also telling. If she cannot answer for her own words, how does she plan to lead? Public service requires accountability, not just defiance. She may be setting up a new political party, but she should first learn how to respect the people she claims to represent.

Sincerely,

David Bidwell-Trifunov, Kelowna
