Drunk Kamloops suspect armed with knife Tasered into custody

An intoxicated man armed with a knife was arrested by the Kamloops RCMP last week after some serious efforts to get him under control.

On Feb. 22, around 10:30 p.m., Kamloops RCMP officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Sydney Avenue after receiving reports of an intoxicated individual with a knife, according to an RCMP news release issued today, Feb. 27.

The suspect was located and arrested for possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes. A knife was seized by officers.

“Due to the presence of a weapon on an uncooperative suspect and the risk it presented to the public and officers, police utilized less lethal intervention options to safely take the man into custody,” Cpl. Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson, said in the release.

The police first used an extended-range impact weapon which uses sponge-tip rounds to get the suspect under control.

After that was found to be unsuccessful, officers used a conductive energy weapon, also often referred to as a Taser.

“The suspect was then safely taken into custody and transported to the hospital with minor injuries, for assessment and care,” Cpl. Evelyn said.

Anyone having witnessed the incident or with relevant information is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2024-5447.
