Montreal's Beaupre, Belanger each win 2nd gold at junior diving nationals

SASKATOON - Montreal's Nicholas Beaupre and Eloise Belanger each won their second gold medal at the junior national diving championships on Friday.

Beaupre placed first with 530.75 points on the men's one-metre platform, beating the previous mark of 517.15 for the 16-19 national age group. Vincent Riendeau of Pointe-Claire, Que., was second at 496.40 and Dylan Grisell of Etobicoke, Ont., third at 464.20. Beaupre had also won gold in the three-metre board on Thursday, setting a new Canadian record for his age group.

''With my spot locked up on the world junior team I felt a lot less stress today," said Beaupre. ''I was really able to go out and do my thing.''

Belanger captured her second gold with 226.80 points in the women's 16-18 three-metre. She edged Myriam Selmani, who was second at 224.20, and Melissa Citrini Beaulieu, third at 215.05. Belanger had won gold on Thursday on the one-metre board.

''I'm very satisfied,'' said Bélanger. ''It had been a while since I produced such a solid performance.''

Montreal's Savannah Nedo won the gold medal in the women’s 14-15 platform by less than four points. Nedo scored a 299.10 mark, while second-place Samantha Maiorino of Pointe-Claire, Que. had 295.30 points. Victoria's Emily Schmidt was an even closer third with 295.25 points.

''The highlight for me was my backward dive,'' said Nedo. ''It wasn't very consistent in practice but it was better in competition today.''

In the girls 11-and-under category, Edmonton's Sasha Gent of Edmonton, Mia Doucet-Vallee of Pointe-Claire, Que., and Edmonton's Maryn Price were 1-2-3.

In the boys 11-and-under three-metre, the top three were Carlo Lopez of Gatineau, Que., Nick Boily of Quebec City and Saskatoon's Rylan Wiens.
