HEDLEY - Motorists heading to the coast can expect periodic delays on Highway 3 as work gets underway on a new bridge in Hedley.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said in a press release drivers can expect delays starting this week as crews begin work to replace the existing bridge in Hedley with a new 26 metre long structure.

A two-lane detour will be put in place while the old bridge is dismantled and removed.

The ministry expects drivers will encounter short delays throughout the work, which is expected to be completed by the fall.

Temporary lane closures will also be required due to paving and roadwork, resulting in single lane, alternating traffic at the site.

The $2.3 million bridge contract was awarded to Dorosh Construction from Langley. The existing Hedley bridge was built in the late 1940s.

Drivers are reminded to obey construction speed zones and follow traffic control signage at all times.
