Civil suit names accused Penticton murderer's ex-wife as co-conspirator

Accused murderer John Brittain's ex-wife Katherine has been named as co-conspirator in a civil action launched last June in Kelowna court.

PENTICTON - A civil suit launched by the daughter of two victims of John Brittain’s alleged Penticton shooting spree has implicated his ex-wife in the murders.

Sarah Young filed the civil claim in Kelowna court in June. Young is the daughter of Susan and Barry Wonch, two of the four victims involved in the April 15, 2019 shootings in which 68-year-old John Brittain has been charged.

Young’s action against Katherine Brittain claims she conspired with John Brittain in the murders. Court documents say the two “wrongfully and maliciously conspired with the defendant John Brittain to commit murder by combining at different times for the purpose of assisting and encouraging each other in committing the murder.”

The lawsuit claims Katherine aided and abetted John Brittain in implementing and perpetuating the murders and that she “instructed, counselled, encouraged and directed Brittain.”

Young is claiming punitive damages including general and aggravated damages, loss of guidance and companionship, loss of support, loss of inheritance, expenses and other losses.

John Brittain has been incarcerated at Okanagan Correctional Centre since the day of the shootings. He and his ex-wife are subject to a non-communication order as Katherine may be called as a witness in future court hearings.

Two other neighbours of Katherine Brittain were also killed, including Darlene Knippleberg and Rudi Winter.
