Highways 1 and 3 will be closed in both directions this afternoon as the Ministry of Transportation is conducting avalanche control work.
From 1 to 3 p.m. today, Dec. 18, Drive B.C. reports that avalanche control work will take place for 15.4 kilometres along Highway 1 between Griffin Lake Avalanche Gate and Clanwilliam OH Bridge. No detours are available.
Highway 3 will be also closed in both directions between 2 and 5 p.m. today between West Avalanche Gate and East Avalanche Gate. Work will span for 18 kilometres in the Kootenay Pass area.
A detour will be in place for Highway 3. For those travelling to Nelson or Creston there is an alternative route available using Highway 3A and the Kootenay Lake Ferry at an estimated travel time of 2.5 hours.
The work is taking place on a day when Environment Canada issued snowfall warnings throughout the Interior.
