REVELSTOKE - As avalanche risk increases crews are doing their part to control the risk of unexpected avalanches along Interior highways.
Avalanche control will be taking place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. today, March 31 along Highway 1 in Glacier National Park and along Highway 3 near Kootenay Pass from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The highways will be closed while crews work.
The risk of avalanche has increased over the past day, with most Interior ranges rated at considerable or high risk. Avalanche Canada has issued an avalanche warning for Western Canada as warmer weather destabilizes snowpacks.
Crews also performed avalanche control along a different section of Highway 1 yesterday and spring cleaning continues on several Interior highways, including sweeping and bridge and road maintenance.
Drive B.C. is also reporting frost heaves on Highway 1 through Glacier National Park, falling ice from Revelstoke to the west boundary of the park and debris in several areas including Three Valley Gap.
