An injured owl that was rescued by an overnight work crew at the Tolko mill in Armstrong a month ago did not survive.

The owl had been picked up and taken into care by the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Delta after it had been discovered at the mill, unable to fly.

Upon arrival at the rehabilitation society, the owl was discovered to have damage to its wing and the team was hopeful for a full recovery.

The owl ended up being euthanized earlier this month, according to raptor care volunteer, Kaitlyn Folvik.

“We think he was electrocuted, it wasn’t just a broken wing,” she said. “It does happen, we see a lot more electrical injuries with eagles because they are bigger. We were hopeful for this owl but unfortunately the wound kept growing and we had to make the decision to put him down.”

Raptor Supervisor Martine Versteeg said her team is grateful for people who keep an eye out for injured wildlife and contact them for help.

The society is a registered non-profit organization whose staff and volunteers are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned raptors and to educating the public on the conservation and importance of them.
