A Vernon man has been charged in connection with a fatal hit and run in the city earlier this week.

Blake Eric Martin, 31, surrendered to police on Monday, Nov. 6, the same day a pedestrian was killed in a hit and run in the early morning hours. Martin is facing a charge of failing to stop at an accident that resulted in death.

Around 4:40 a.m. on Monday, officers responded to a fatal hit and run involving a pedestrian in the 4300 block of 25 Avenue in Vernon. The victim had been hit by a vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were able to identify the make and model of the car using pieces that fell off the vehicle in the collision. RCMP then used CCTV footage to get the vehicle’s license plate number.

Armed with a search warrant, officers seized the suspect vehicle from a property. The accused surrendered himself to police and was arrested.

Martin appeared in court on Monday and was released from custody. He'll be back in court in the new year.
