KELOWNA – It’s not only retailers counting on the holiday season to push the bottom line into the black. People open up their wallets and schedules for charities in greater numbers at Christmas time.

It’s no different in Kelowna.

You probably saw the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign volunteers outside local retail shops. The money they get helps pay for the Christmas Hamper program and keeps the charity solvent throughout the year. There are many other local charitable organizations that boost their efforts during the holiday season, but you can help them out any time of the year.

The organizations which provide shelter and food for the city’s less fortunate like the Kelowna Gospel Mission, Inn From The Cold and the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society are great places to donate at this time of the year.

The United Way of the Central Okanagan and South Okanagan/Similkameen is another top-of-mind charity during the holidays, along with the Kelowna Community Food Bank.

And don’t forget the animals. There are a number of local animal charities including the B.C. SPCA – Kelowna Branch and The Responsible Animal Care Society.

If you’d like to give some of your time over the holidays (or maybe throughout the year), here is a full list of the organizations in the Central Okanagan looking for volunteers.
