VAVENBY – While the 'do not consume' water order is in effect, Vavenby residents can use the shower facilities at the North Thompson Sportsplex arena.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District says facilities at the Clearwater arena will be open from Jan. 20 to Jan. 27, according to a media release.

There are separate dressing rooms for men, women, and families with up to three shower heads per room. Residents should look for signage at the arena or ask a staff member where the rooms are located.

The showers are available at the following times:

  • Saturday, Jan. 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday, Jan. 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Monday, Jan. 23 to Friday, Jan. 27 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The TNRD has arranged a bus service for anyone needing transportation to the Clearwater arena. The bus is scheduled to leave the Vavenby store at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and at 6 p.m. on Monday to Friday.

The release states there's been confusion circulating on social media regarding the Vavenby Water System and the water restrictions. The TNRD is reminding residents to check the date on all communications they are reading regarding the 'do not consume' order, to ensure it's the most up to date information.

The 'do not consume' order was implemented by the Interior Health Authority on Jan. 18 after a semi truck hauling diesel crashed and fuel ran into the waterway.

No diesel was found in a sample of the Vavenby Water System on Jan. 19. However, Interior Health requires further testing as part of the 'do not consume' order. Samples will be drawn and tested daily and the results will be shared with the public.
