KELOWNA - Families are getting excited for YMCA Healthy Kids Day taking place this Sunday at the Kelowna Family Y and the Rutland Sports Fields from 12 to 4 p.m.

Games and crafts, interactive entertainment, an outdoor climbing wall, prizes and more will keep kids busy and active while connecting parents with resources that will help their families live healthier long-term. There will be basketball challenges, open swim time for families, kids health assessments, family yoga and Zumba classes, martial arts demonstrations and tons of activities put on by the Y and community partners like the BC SPCA, Okanagan Gymnastics Centre, Scouts Canada, and the Okanagan Regional Library.

There is something for everyone who wants to join, and the best thing is, it gets kids outside running, playing, laughing and burning off energy the old fashioned way.

“Our kids love coming to YMCA Healthy Kids Day,” explains local mom, Bonnie Siddon. “They run around to as many stations they can to get their passports stamped hoping to win one of the great prizes. They love doing all the activities! I think their favourites are the tug-o-war challenges and swimming in the pool.”

With over one in three children being overweight in Canada, leading a healthy, active lifestyle is more important than ever before. Competing priorities, lack of work/life balance, and money are key barriers for parents in today’s society and the Y is working to make it easier for parents to live healthier each day. Healthy Kids Day will connect families to resources offered both at the Y and through external community partners, and renew kids’ interest in outdoor, active play.

Year round the YMCA of Okanagan offers proven programs and services which are convenient, healthy and affordable for families. The Y’s financial assistance program makes it possible for families to participate regardless of their background or circumstance.
