Finance Minister Joe Oliver touts Tory financial record in Vancouver

VANCOUVER - Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver has delivered a campaign-style stump speech to the Vancouver Board of Trade, touting his government's financial record.

The afternoon meet-and-greet is the latest in a series of cross-country events introducing the former natural resources minister as the country's new finance minister.

Oliver spoke about the country's financial situation and his government's plans to provide tax relief to the middle-class — if they're re-elected next spring.

He spoke about the five financial pillars of his Conservative government, including the development of natural resources like the B.C. natural gas sector worth $7.5-billion in new investment a year to the province every year for the next two decades.

Oliver was named finance minister last month, after former minister Jim Flaherty announced his retirement.

Flaherty — one of the country's longest-serving finance ministers — died earlier this month.
