Kamloops will play fictional Angel Grove in Power Rangers movie

KAMLOOPS - Producers liked what they saw and have officially given the City of Kamloops the go-ahead to star in the upcoming Power Rangers movie.

This week Lions Gate film executives visited the city to scout potential shooting locations for the film. Publicist Ernie Malik says while specific locations haven’t been decided on, the city will serve as the fictional community Angel Grove for some scenes.

Film crews are expected to head to town in mid- to late-April for a 10-day shoot. The film is currently in production in Vancouver and is set to be released in 2017.

“Usually filmmakers are attracted to our open vistas or winding roads through our beautiful scenery. This year, the film commission is noticing an increase in attention from production companies looking to film outside Vancouver and in our city streets and in smaller community businesses,” Thompson-Nicola Film Commission Chair Robin Smith says in a release.

Producers are now in talks with the Kamloops Downtown Business Association, Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc council and other local organizations. Some of the producers working on the film have previously worked in the Kamloops area on other projects. The executive producer of the film, Brent O'Connor, previously filmed the movie Firewall starring Harrison Ford at Tranquille Farm. Others who previously worked on the movie Monster Trucks, which was filmed around Kamloops and near Ashcroft will be returning as well.
