A team of scammers claiming they need fictitious legal fees are still active in the Kamloops area, so far making off with $40,000 from their victims.

Police got another report earlier this week, leading them to believe the scammers are still trying to scam people in the Kamloops area.

Kamloops RCMP hasn't said how many victims have lost money to the scammers nor how many attempts have failed, only saying around $40,000 was stolen from "several people" in the area.

"The scam does appear to be targeting seniors and people with landlines," Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in an emailed statement.

The most recent attempt police are aware of failed on Jan. 4, when the victim recognized the call for what it was.

"The investigation is ongoing and we continue to encourage the public to report any similar incidents or attempts, and to remember these criminals are very skilled at evoking fear," Cpl. Evelyn said.

Police received more than 30 reports in two days of scammers claiming to be either legal counsel or friends of their victims' family members, according to a Dec. 30 news release. They claim they need money to pay for bail or legal fees after being involved in an accident they are at fault in.

RCMP issued a photo of one of the suspects, describing her as petite, 5'2" tall and possible Asian. Investigators believe she's not working alone as she was the passenger in a white SUV or car.

Kamloops RCMP said this suspect is involved in a scam seeking legal fees from victims, but she's not working alone.

Although they've targeted people with phone calls, the fraudsters have been arranging to meet their targets in person.

"If you do receive a call like this, please contact your loved one or police before sending any money, even if the caller warns and threatens you not to," Evelyn added.
